THE STORYTomorrowland is a compelling testimony to the indomitable spirit of "Katya", a young Russian woman trying to make her way in the powder keg that is Moscow following the fall of communism. Her life is further complicated by the unexpected arrival of "Merc" Maddison, the young American with whom she has just enjoyed a brief but passionate affair in Paris. The musical charts the turbulent course of their subsequent relationship which parallels the history taking place around them during the dramatic days of the "October Events" in 1993. In the context of her native city "Katya" is even more of a mystery to "Merc", passionate and dismissive in turn. She is trying to take advantage of the new capitalist system to open an American style diner in Moscow, but what is the real nature of her relationship with the charming "business man", "Tolja" who is financing her? When "Katya" is missing after meeting him for dinner, can "Merc" really believe she spent the night with "Lyuba", the bubbly mad waitress at the diner? And what is the role of the charismatic "Slava" who seems to have connections with the authorities? His assistant, "Jenya" is certainly seduced into "Tolja's" camp but as "Slava" himself says, she'd sell her body for a good meal. "Ludmilla", the old cook recruited by "Katya", takes the bewildered "Merc" under her wing and grows, despite herself, to admire his steadfast integrity. It is she who eventually confronts "Katya" about the priorities of life. And the truth is that "Katya" cannot really bear to let "Merc" go, she is more in need of his love than she can admit. She fears for his safety and the danger his presence brings to her own precarious situation. And as the premises for the diner become inevitably involved with the dramatic events taking place on the streets outside, those dangers become ever more threatening. Comedy relief is provided by "Misha's" combo which "Merc" engages as the group who will play in the diner at weekends. "Misha" with "Sasha" and "Vaska" his two unlikely bodyguards and the artistic "Igor" have a key part in the events which decide the destiny of the diner, and as the tanks roll on the White House the lovers rollercoaster story has as many unexpected twists and turns as the historical "Events" watched by the world on television. Studded with memorable numbers, sweetened with a generous helping of comedy and spiced with a strong story with memorable characters, "Tomorrowland", the Moscow Musical, is set to make its own contribution to a great theatrical tradition. |
